    MOORCROFT VASES SELL FOR 6,000 AT JAMES ADAM

    A WILLIAM MOORCROFT BURSLEM CHINA PAIR OF CIRCULAR BALUSTER TAPERING SLENDER VASES

    A William Moorcroft Burslem china par of circular baluster tapering slender vases sold for a hammer price of 6,000 at the January sale at James Adam in Dublin on January 29. They are stamped  ‘Florian Ware, Jas MacIntyre & Co Ltd., Burslem, England’ and with Moorcroft signature in green.
    William Moorcroft was born in Burslem and trained in London at the National Art Training School. He gained a reputation as one of the leading pottery designers in Britain and was highly sought after by retailers such as Tiffanys. Moorcroft drew inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement and was fond of bold colour and Oriental form. This was reflected in his work, notably in his Florian Range at MacIntyre & Co. which was extremely popular.

    This gave him the confidence to leave James MacIntyre & Co. and set up on his own. His departure was by no means amicable. It is reported that Moorcroft left suddenly and took many of MacIntyres employees with him. William Moorcroft was the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career including the Gold medal for his designs at the 1904 St Louis Exhibition. In 1928 he was awarded Royal Patronage by Queen Mary. Moorcroft is one of the last remaining independent art potteries in the world today.

    THE RISING MEDAL AWARDED TO JOSEPH PLUNKETT AT WHYTE’S

    THE 1916 Rising Medal awarded posthumously to Joseph Plunkett comes up at Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin on Saturday January 21.  In 1941 Grace, the patriot’s widow, refused to attend a ceremony to receive the medal, probably in protest against the wartime policy of internment of IRA members. Grace Gifford married Joseph Plunkett in the prison chapel at Kilmainham seven hours before his execution, became a prominent republican, opposed the Treaty and was imprisoned by the Irish Free State government.   When the medal was posted to her she threw it in a bin, where it was rescued by a friend, Cathal Gannon.  Grace told him to keep it as she did not want to have it. It is estimated at 40,000-60,000.

    The silk flag of the Costello Volunteers, raised in Mayo and Roscommon in 1779, is a rarity estimated at 20,000-30,000. The sale features 40 lots of early printed maps and charts of Ireland and its coast, a collection Staffordshire figures of Irish nationalists including Tone, O’Connell, Parnell and Gladstone, the George V ministerial box used by Sean Lemass from 1932-39, the 1886 bandleaders mace from the Brian Borhoime Band, Clontarf, a piece of shrapnel recovered from Rathdown Park, Terenure following the bombing by German aircraft in January 1941, gold coins and banknotes among almost 550 lots.

    AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF BOULLE FURNITURE AT CHRISTIE’S PARIS

    The sale of contents of the Palais Rose in Paris by Christie’s  on March 7 will give collectors and connoisseurs an opportunity to acquire Old Master paintings and drawings, fine furniture, porcelain and jewellery.  Christie’s will offer the collection of Boni de Castellane & Anna Gould, legendary figures of the late 19th and early 20thcenturies.  Boni de Castellane, a celebrated dandy of the Parisian scene, married Anna Gould, daughter of an American millionaire who made his fortune in railways, in 1895.  Their Palais Rose was completed in 1902 and hosted some of the most celebrated parties in Paris with guests including the Queen of Naples, Queen Isabel II of Spain, Kapurthala’s Mahardjah and the Kings of Spain and Portugal in 1905.  Anna Gould filed for divorce in 1906, mainly due to the exorbitant expenses he had generated. Diane de Castellane lived in this home surrounded by treasures, the majority of which she had inherited from her grandmother Anna Gould, and of which the impressive collection of Boulle furniture is the most significant of all.     A COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 1,000 HISTORIC AUTOGRAPHS IN SUSSEX

    A collection of more than a 1,000 signatures from historical figures from from Charles Dickens to the Duke of Wellington to the First Men on the Moon to Buffalo Bill and Harry Houdini will be offered by the Sussex auctioneers Campbells on January 24 in Worthing. Amassed by the late John Evans, who was passionate about politics and was one of the first Anti-Vivisection campaigners, the signatures are either framed or in albums.

    Auctioneer Paul Campbell said: “It’s been such a privilege to turn the pages of one man’s life and passion and to see and consider the history he brought together. The Dalai Lama is next to Spencer Perceval, the Prime Minister who was murdered inside the House of Commons in 1812.” Estimates range from £50 to £1,000, with the earliest signature dating from 1697 from the 1st Duke of Marlborough. Literary names include J.M Barrie; Rudyard Kipling; William Wordsworth; Arthur Conan Doyle and John Ruskin.  Most Prime Ministers from Robert Walpole to Winston Churchill through to Tony Blair are featured along with explorer Sir Edmund Hillary and Lord Hunt – who led the successful 1953 expedition to Mount Everest; photographs taken on the moon that were later signed by the first men on the moon including Neil Armstrong; Buzz Aldrin and Charlie Duke as well as artists including Pablo Picasso; Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Dame Laura Knight.

    EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF FAILED FRENCH INVASION OF IRELAND AT WHYTE’S

    An eyewitness account of the failed French invasion at Bantry dated December 31, 1796 comes up at Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin on January 21.  A three page letter written by Colonel Thomas Balfour of the North Lowland Fencibles to his wife in Orkey reads:  “We have been marched here in consequence of an alarm spread by a French fleet appearing off Bantry Bay … one officer and four seamen … landed and have been made prisoners”.

    “Expedition d’Irlande” was a 15,000 strong invasion force gathered by the French Directory for landing in Ireland in December 1796. The fleet left France on December 15 and the operation was abandoned in Bantry on December 29.  The letter is estimated at 200-300.  The auction will include maps, historical manuscripts, medals, militaria, sports memorabilia, advertising, travel, coins and banknotes.

The sale of interiors including the ski sale will offer 100 posters by the most sought after artists depicting iconic resorts.     A SALE IN OLDCASTLE ON DECEMBER 30

    FOX HEAD STIRRUP CUPS AT CORK AUCTION ROOMS

    home5a_tA collection of four Fox head stirrup cups will be a feature at the sale at Cork Auction Rooms on December 28.  Such cups are rare and of interest to specialist collectors.  One sold for 1,500 at Cork Auction Rooms two years ago. On offer this time is a pair of  Fox Head form stirrup cups and a  pair of Victorian Staffordshire stirrup cups in the form of fox hounds.  Each pair is estimated at 600-1,200.  A pair of Jack B. Yeats pen and ink cartoons and letters to his sister Susan  – “Two Dublin debutants exercising themselves close by O’ Connell Bridge” and “The turnip sculptor” – are estimated at 6,000-8,000.  A c1835 Georgian Irish mahogany sideboard with acanthus leaf decoration on barley twist supports is estimated at 1,800-2,500 and the sale will feature a selection miniature portraits and silhouettes.
