RARE PINK GROUND FALANGCAI BOWL TO MAKE MILLIONS

    Thursday, March 1st, 2018

A SUPERBLY ENAMELLED, FINE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE PINK-GROUND FALANGCAI BOWL
PUCE-ENAMEL YUZHI MARK AND PERIOD OF KANGXI

A superbly enamelled, fine and exceedingly rare pink-ground Falangcai Bowl is among the highlights at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Chinese Works of Art Spring Sale Series 2018 on April 3.   This is without question the finest example of its type. A closely related example at the National Palace Museum, Taipei is painted with different flowers but the exact same colour ground. The rarity of the colours and the perfection of the firing make it likely the two were painted and fired side by side. Thrown and fired by potters at the Imperial kilns in Jingdezhen, the bowls were then painted in the Imperial Palace workshops in the Forbidden City in Beijing, possibly by Jesuits resident at the court of the Kangxi emperor, and fired a second time.  This one, from the celebrated collector Henry M. Knight, is expected to make more than US$25.6 million.

The auction will feature a rediscovered imperial heirloom handscroll bequeathed by the last Emperor Pu Yi to his younger brother Pu Jie. Depicting ten landscapes the handscroll is the greatest masterpiece of renowned Imperial court painter Qian Weicheng.  It is estimated at US$6.4-8.9 million.

The series of six sales will offer about 300 lots with a total estimate of nearly US$93.5 million. Nicolas Chow, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Asia, International Head and Chairman, Chinese Works of Art said: “There is extraordinary quality and breadth in our offerings of Chinese art this season, with possibly the finest assemblage of Qing porcelain on offer in recent memory.”

More than 3000 interiors lots will come under the hammer at a two day sale by Victor Mee Auctioneers in partnerhip with Niall Mullen at The Heritage Hotel, Killenard, Co. Laois on March 5 and 6.  The sale will feature contents from iconic Dublin nightspots Howl at the Moon and the Residence Club. There is a beautiful selection of original refurbished furniture from the Shelbourne Hotel, and among the 150 pieces are some striking French bronze chandeliers. Tuesday, January 16th, 2018

A George II gold Irish freedom box is among the highlights of the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller which Christie’s is touring prior to sales at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York in late spring. The freedom box, to the far right of the composite image above,  is by William Currie, Dublin and estimated at $30,000-50,000.  Christie’s has confirmed additional dates and locations for preview exhibitions of the collection to its flagship galleries in London (February 21 – March 8), Beijing (April 6 – 7), Los Angeles (April 6 – 12), and Shanghai (April 10 – 11). With each stop on the pre-sale tour, additional works of art and objects will be unveiled, revealing new facets of this storied, multi-category collection. The exhibitions, which are open to the public, are sponsored in partnership with private aviation company VistaJet.

As a guide for collectors, Christie’s has launched a special issue of Christie’s Magazine dedicated to the Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller. The issue re-acquaints readers with the Rockefeller family’s unique place in American history, and their long legacy in the realms of art collecting, commerce, and philanthropy. All of the estate proceeds from the sale of the Collection will benefit established charities.
