    FRANKLIN EXPEDITION FIND PROVES TIMELY DUBLIN AUCTIONEERS

    For Whyte’s auctioneers the announcement from Canada’s Prime Minister this week that one of two ships from the Franklin expedition which vanished in the Arctic more than 160 years ago has been found proved timely.  Lot 578 in their sale collectibles sale in Dublin on September 20 is the Arctic and Crimean medals awarded to Wexford man Joseph Randall, who sailed on the HMS Herald in 1848  in a search for the lost expedition.  Joseph Randall’s medals are estimated at 1,000-1,500.

    Sir John Franklin led the two ships and 129 men in 1845 to chart the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The expedition’s disappearance shortly after became one of the great mysteries of the age of Victorian exploration.The loss of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which was built in Topsham, Devon, prompted one of largest searches in history, running from 1848 to 1859. The search resulted in the discovery of the Northwest Passage, which runs from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic archipelago.

    The Canadian government began searching for Franklin’s ships in 2008 as part of a strategy to assert Canada’s sovereignty over the Northwest Passage, which has recently become accessible to shipping because of melting Arctic ice. Expedition sonar images from the waters of Victoria Strait, just off King William Island, clearly show the wreckage of a ship on the ocean floor.

    THE COLLECTION OF RACHEL LAMBERT MELLON AT SOTHEBY’S

    A Rothko and a spectacular Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond are among the highlights of the November sales series at Sotheby’s in New York of the extraordinary collection of the late Rachel Lambert Mellow.  Details of the sales, whcih are expected to realise more than $100 million, were announced by Sotheby’s today.  The auctions will kick off on November 10 with an evening sale dedicated to a curated selection of Mrs Mellon’s fine art, which encapsulates her sophisticated eye and approach to collecting. The pieces on offer in the Masterworks auction span four centuries.  They are led by two incredible paintings by Mark Rothko estimated respectively at $20-30 million and $15-20 million. Sotheby’s will present Mrs. Mellon’s collection of Jewels & Objects of Vertu in a dedicated auction beginning on the evening of November 20 and featuring a spectacular Fancy Vivid Blue diamond estimated at $10-15 million. This sale is to continue the following morning. The series will culminate in a three-day Interiors sale from November 21-23,  with fine art, furniture, porcelain, silver, glassware, and decoration from the Mellons’ residences.  The more than 2,000 lots are drawn from the Mellons’ residences in the United States and abroad, and were acquired over a lifetime.

    Proceeds from the sales will benefit The Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, a charitable entity established by Mrs. Mellon in memory of her father. The Foundation supports horticultural and educational endeavours.  UPDATE:  THE white glove auction of a curated section of fine art from the collection totalled $158,757,250 on November 10.

    THE MARIA EDGEWORTH TABLE AT ADAMS SLANE CASTLE AUCTION

    Among many lots of interest at the upcoming James Adam Country House Collections auction at Slane Castle on October 12 and 13 is the Maria Edgeworth table. Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) is the author of  Castle Rackrent, a satire on Anglo Irish landlords. She was one of the first realist writers in children’s  literature and a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe.

    This Italian early nineteenth century scagliola trompe l’oeil circular table top by Pietro Della Valle with signature acanthus leaf and anthemion ground is decorated in a naturalistic manner with four scattered engravings. It contains the sheet music for ‘St. Patricks Day in the morning’. There is an envelope addressed to ‘Miss Edgeworth, Edgeworthstown, Ireland’ from William Macbean and an extract from Sir Walter Scott’s General Preface to The Waverely Novels where he commends Miss Edgeworth’s literary accomplishments.  Dated to 1842 this rare curiosity is estimated at 40,000-60,000.

    FURNITURE FROM KENTSHIRE GALLERIES AT SOTHEBY’S NEW YORK

    More than 400 pieces of fine English and European furniture and decoration from the legendary Kentshire Galleries will come under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York on October 18.  Founded in 1940 by Benson Imberman Kentshire Galleries has an international reputation for exceptional antique furniture and works of art.  In 2007 the galleries opened at 700 Madison Avenue.  Their building on 12th Street has been sold and the works on offer are from there. Kentshire will remain focused on Madison Avenue and their galleries at Bergdorf Goodman specialising in jewellery and the decorative arts.  Here is a small selection:

    IRISHMAN’S VICTORIA CROSS TO BE AUCTIONED BY DIX NOONAN WEBB

    The Victoria Cross won by enlisted Irishman Stephen Garvin – one of the great heroes of the Victorian era in Britain – will be auctioned by Dix Noonan Webb in London on September 19. His group of six gallantry, campaign and long service medals is estimated at £120,000-140,000.The unique Victoria Cross and Distinguished Conduct Medals awarded to Sgt. Major Stephen Garvin – the only man to win both during the Indian Mutiny – are being offered by a private collector.
    Stephen Garvin, the most highly decorated non commissioned British soldier to emerge from the Indian Mutiny, was one of the first Irishmen to be awarded the VC. He won it during the Siege of Delhi on June 23, 1857, less than a year after the award had been instituted. It was presented to him by  Queen Victoria at an investiture at Windsor Home Park in 1860. Born in Cashel in 1826 he enlisted in the 74th Regiment in 1842. Transferring to the 60th Rifles he saw action in the Punjab Campaign in 1848-49 and on the North West Frontier in 1849-50 and was serving in India when the Indian Mutiny broke out.

    AN ONLINE CHARITY SALE AT CHRISTIE’S FOR NSPCC WITH GOLDFINGER

    The 50th anniversary of Goldfinger – which had its world premiere on September 17, 1964 – is being marked at Christie’s by an exclusive online charity auction in aid of the NSPCC.  EON Productions has commissioned a one off gold plated third scale replica of James Bon’s iconc Aston Martin DB5.  It is signed by legendary Bond Production Designer Sir Ken Adam, who designed the Q branch modifcations to the car for Sean Connery as agent OO7. Prop-makers Propshop, who manufactured the scale model DB5’s required for special effect scenes in Skyfall using 3D scans of the full size DB5, have created a one-off gold model with 24 carat gold plated detailing, complete with radio controlled machine guns, bullet proof shield and revolving number plate. The unique Goldfinger model is expected to sell for between £40,000-60,000.  Online bidding is underway and it runs to September 17. Another highlight is an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra watch created to mark the anniversary of the film.

    TURNER MASTERPIECE ROME FROM MOUNT AVENTINE AT SOTHEBY’S

    J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) – Rome from Mount Aventine (£15-20 million)  UPDATE: IT SOLD FOR A NEW WORLD RECORD OF £30.3 MILLION.

    One of the last great Turner masterpieces in private hands – Rome from Mount Aventine – comes up at Sotheby’s in London in December.  In immaculate condition it has been in the Roseberry Collection for the last 136 years. It is described as one of Turner’s most subtle and atmospheric depictions of the eternal city.  The large scale oil is distinguished by its exceptional preservation.   An expert from Sotheby’s  said that there are hairs from Turner’s own paintbrush still trapped on the canvas, with drips of paint visible down its side.

    It is one of less than ten major Turner’s known to be in private hands.  Alex Bell  of Sotheby’s said: “This painting, which is nearly 200 years old, looks today as if it had come straight from the easel of the artist: never re-lined and never subject to restoration the picture retains the freshness of the moment it was painted:.

    The auction next December 3 will coincide with the exhibition “Late Turner” at the Tate.  The painting is estimated at £15-20 million.  The current auction record for Turner is £29,721,250 for Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino.  This was bought by the J.Paul Getty Museum at Sotheby’s in London in 2010.

    MANCHESTER UNITED JERSEYS AT WHYTE’S AUCTION

    Each of the jerseys worn by Manchester United team mates at the testimonial match for Irish Captain Denis Irwin at Old Trafford in August 2000 will come up at a sale entitled The Eclectic Collector at Whyte’s in Dublin on September 20. They are from a private collector living in Dublin. The 17 jerseys are embroidered “Denis Irwin Testimonial Game” above the Manchester United Crest.  Marking the Corkman’s long and successful career at Manchester United each one is signed by players including Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Teddy Sherringham and Roy Keane.  Whytes are guiding the lot at 3,000-5,000.  More than 800 lots will come under the hammer.  UPDATE: THIS LOT MADE 3,000 AT HAMMER

    FONTHILL DRAGON JAR TO MAKE MORE THAN US$10.3 MILLION

    THE Fonthill Dragon Jar is expected to sell for more than US$10.3 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on October 8. The carved celadon glazed jar has the seal mark and period of Qianlong.  The classic jar form was rendered in a larger format than previously and  the eternal subjects of dragons among waves and clouds are portrayed in exceptional style.

    Other highlights include a Xuande fish stem cup from the Chunzaizhai Collection which is estimated at US$5.1-7.7 million.

    Nicolas Chow, Sotheby’s Asia Deputy Chairman and International Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, said: “This season, it is our privilege to present a wonderful selection of some of the world’s most celebrated collections – Hosokawa, Hausmann, Baoyizhai – spanning a diversity of fields such as Imperial porcelain, later bronzes and lacquer.  Besides, we will also offer a number of masterworks of Chinese Imperial porcelain, including the magnificently carved celadon jar decorated with dragons formerly in the Fonthill collection.”
