    CLASSICAL LANDSCAPES AND SURREAL VISIONS AT ADAMS IRISH ART

    FROM the classical Irish landscapes of Paul Henry to the surreal visions of Colin Middleton the James Adam sale of Important Irish art in Dublin on December 4 covers vast tracts of artistic Irish ground. There are 177 lots.  The pain of emigration as felt by some many millions of Irish people is captured in Alfred Grey’s The Emigrants last Farewell and the consolations of the pub for those left behind by artists like Sean Keating, Jack B. Yeats and Harry Kernoff.  Louis le Brocquy’s Travellers, a tapestry from 1948, shows another aspect of Ireland and Tony O’Malley’s Irish Place, Callan, Co.     WIDE VARIETY TO CHOOSE FROM AT O’DRISCOLL ART SALE IN DUBLIN

    From a Madoura plate by Picasso to a field painting by the Irish contemporary artist John Noel Smith there is something to suit all tastes at Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale of British and Irish art at the Clyde Court Hotel in Dublin on December 2.  Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol are also represented in a 174 lot sale comprised mostly of Irish art.  Estimates are reasonable and reflect the current market. The catalogue is online.  Here is a small selection.  UPDATE:   The auction realised 273,000 at hammer and was 73 per cent sold.

    WHEN STUBBS MET VISCOUNT LIMERICK

    When famous horse painter George Stubbs met Viscount Limerick the result was a painting of one the the artists few Irish clients.  George Stubbs, A.R.A. (1724-1806) produced a portrait of James Hamilton resting on a wooded path by a stream in 1765. Hamilton was an Irish peer who served as High Sheriff of Louth in 1757. He was styled Viscount Limerick from 1756-1758 and became 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil in 1758. The painting is considered a masterpiece of  the early maturity of Stubbs.  Clanbrassil was one of the few Irish clients to commission a horse portrait by the celebrated artist.  He was a cousin of one of Stubbs’ most important clients, the 3rd Duke of Portland. It comes up at Christie’s Old Master and British paintings sale in London on December 3 and is estimated at £1.5-2.5 million.  Image Courtesy, Christie’s Images Ltd., 2013

    HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT 1574 BIBLE AT SHEPPARDS

    An historically significant Geneva bible published in London in 1574 is among the highly collectible lots at Sheppards three day sale in Durrow, Co. Laois on November 26, 27 and 28.  This is the version used by Shakespeare, John Knox and John Donne.  It precedes the King James translation by 51 years. In 1620 it was one of the bibles taken to America by the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower. This one, published by Christopher Barker in hardcover, is estimated at 2,000-3,000.  It contains an inscription from August 1945 by the Rector of Bansha, Co. Tipperary noting the dropping of the atomic bombs and recording that: “All everywhere are shocked and bewildered as to its effectiveness”.

    The focus on November 26 and 27 is on antique furniture, fine, decorative and applied art.  On Thursday, November 28 there is Oriental art and Chinese ceramics, fine and rare wines.  Here is a small selection. The catalogue is online.

    A magnificent pair of Imperial vases is a highlight at Sotheby’s Russian sales in London next week. On November 25 and 26 Russian paintings, sculpture and decorative arts estimated at more than £16 million will come under the hammer over a series of four auctions.  It will include the first ever sale dedicated to contemporary art from Russia and Eastern Europe held by an international auction house.

    The vases, made at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, date from 1833 in the reign of Nicholas I.  The three decades of his reign are regarded as the peak of porcelain production in Russia.  He was an enthusiastic patron of the Imperial Manufactory and was, apart from Catherine the Great, the Russian monarch most interested in the arts.
    Ilya Kabakov Holidays No. 6 dates from 1987. The beautiful sunlit scene conceals a subversive message.  The surface is littered with sweet wrappers, the only abundantly available consumer product in Soviet Russia.  This work represents fabricated joy masking the dull reality of daily life.

    Paul Henry’s The Lake is the prime lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on November 25.   Painted in 1928 it is a classical west of Ireland landscape and is estimated at 80,000-100,000.     ORPEN SELLS FOR £962,500 AT SOTHEBY’S

    Painted in 1915 Sir William Orpen’s portait of Lady Idina Wallace, characterised as The Bolter in three novels by Nancy Mitford, sold for £962,500 at Sotheby’s in London this afternoon. It had been estimated at £800,000-1.2 million.

    At the same British and Irish Art sale William Scott’s Blue and White sold for £482,500.  The Bog Road by Paul Henry and Loiterers by Walter Frederick Osborne each sold for £62,250.  Two works by Louis le Brocquy, Child Against a White Wall and The Family sold respectively for £52,250 and £50,oo0.  The top estimate for each was £50,000. A le Broquy Tapestry, The Garlanded Goat, failed to find a buyer.

    Sotheby’s auction of British and Irish art realized £7,178,252.  The top lot was Proserpine, a defining image of the Pre-Raphaelite movement  by Dante Gabriel Rosetti which sold for £3,274,500, a record for the artist at auction.  Orpen’s portrait was the second most expensive lot in the auction. It was the strongest and highest price for an early 20th century Irish picture since 2007 and the second highest price for a work by the artist at auction.

    ARTWORK FROM MUNICH APARTMENT TO GO ONLINE

    A total of 590 artworks from the cache of 1,406 seized from the Munich apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt are to be put on line by the German authorities from this week.  The lost art database www.lostart.de focuses on work thought to have been stolen or extorted by the Nazis.   It is operated by the Liason Office of Magdeburg, a federal institution for cultural documentation and losses.  The publication online of the database is an attempt to discover the original owners of works including pieces by Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Liebermann, Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin and Eugene Delacroix.

    In an interview with Der Spiegel the German recluse said he would not give anything back voluntarily.  He said his father, a Nazi era art dealer, had acquired the works legally and that as heir he is the rightful owner.

    UPDATE APRIL 2014:  The German government announced an agreement with Mr. Gurlitt under which a team of international experts have one year to investigate the provenance of the seized artworks. The deal will take effect when the artworks are released by the Bavarian government. Mr. Gurlitt can prove ownership of some of the works.  The deal covers those with questionable provenance.

    UPDATE:  MAY 6, 2014:  Cornelius Gurlitt died today at his apartment in Munich.
