    The proposed sale of a  cache of 33 letters written by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy to Dublin based priest Fr. Joseph Leonard  from 1950-64 has been cancelled.  The treasure trove of private letters had made headlines around the world.  Mrs. Kennedy was intensely private and the letters offered a never before seen glimpse into her inner world. The personal correspondence was to have been sold by Sheppards of Durrow, Co. Laois on June 10.

    A spokesman for the vendors, All Hallows College in Dublin, said the auction was cancelled at the behest of its directors and the Vincentian Fathers.  They are in discussions with the Kennedy family on how best to preserve and curate the archive for the future.

    DALOU MASTERPIECE FROM WESTPORT HOUSE SELLS AT SOTHEBY’S

    Thursday, May 22nd, 2014
    A detail from the work.

    Aime Jules Dalou (1838-1902) A detail from the work.

     A rare 19th century French masterpiece which has graced Westport House in Co. Mayo for generations sold for £362,500 at Sotheby’s in London on May 21.  This was within the estimate of £300,000-500,000.  The terracotta by Aimé-Jules Dalou  –  Boulonnaise allaitant son enfant (A Young Mother from Boulogne feeding her Child) – had been acquired directly from the artist in 1876 by George John Browne, 3rd Marquess of Sligo.
    On its original revolving wooden base it was one of the last museum quality works by Dalou in private hands. It was sold, reluctantly,  by the 11th Marquess who hopes to use the proceeds to secure the future of Westport House which is a major west of Ireland tourist attraction.
    It was bought by the National Gallery of Canada.

    And she forgot the stars, the moon, and sun

    And she forgot the blue above the trees,

    And she forgot the dells where waters run

    And she forgot the chilly autumn breeze;

    She had no knowledge when the day was done

    And the new morn she saw not; but in peace

    Hung over her sweet Basil evermore

    and moisten’d it with tears unto the core
