Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Calvary – 1615 (£3-4 million). (Click on image to enlarge it).

An imposing landscape with the Crucifixion by  Pieter Brueghel the Younger is part of a remarkable group of Flemish Old Master paintings from the Coppée Collection to be sold at Sotheby’s in London this summer. Assembled by the Belgian industrialist Evence Coppée III (1882-1945) in the 1920’s  the collection is comprised almost exclusively of 16th and 17th century works.  There is an emphasis on the works of Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1637/8) and the Brueghel family. Of the paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Younger the sale will feature  the landscape with the Crucifixion (£3-4 million), an Outdoor Wedding Dance (£1.-1.5 million) and an evocative Winter Landscape (£1-1.5 million). The selection also encompasses impressive paintings resulting from a collaboration between Jan Brueghel the Younger and artists such as Frans Francken the Younger and Hendrik van Balen the Elder, as well as works from the North Netherlandish School and the School of Northern France.

Passed on by direct descent from Baron Coppée, these works have not appeared on the market for almost a century. They will be auctioned as part of a group of 19 paintings from the Coppée Collection at Sotheby’s Old Master sales on July 9 and 10, 2014.  The Calvary is one of only two signed works by Brueghel on the subject of the Crucifixion.  It ranks amongst the rarest of his compositions.

ONLY SURVIVING AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF RACHMANINOV 2ND SYMPHONY

    Thursday, April 17th, 2014

rach 1rachTHE only surviving autograph manuscript for Sergei Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony in E Minor, OP.27  is to be sold at Sotheby’s in London on May 20.  Presumed lost since soon after the symphony’s premiere in St Petersburg in 1908, it was rediscovered nearly a century later in 2004 in the estate of a European private collector.  It is estimated at £1-1.5 million.

This is one of the few autograph manuscripts of a symphony, central to the international orchestral repertory, remaining in private hands. In its 320 pages, it contains a wealth of new information, revealing Rachmaninov’s compositional processes when he was at the height of his powers, in one of his greatest works. There is even new unpublished material, unknown to Rachmaninov scholars and absent in any edition of the symphony.

    UPDATE: IT SOLD FOR £1,202,500

OLDEST BIBLICAL MANUSCRIPTS ON-LINE AT CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY

    Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

The Biblical Papyrus Collection  at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin – with some of the oldest and most important Biblical manuscripts in the world – is being digitised.  The oldest manuscript of Paul’s Letters is dated A.D. 200.  The oldest surviving copy of all four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles in one Codex and portions of the Book of Revelation dating to the 3rd century are among the manuscripts on display.  The work involved partnership with the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) in Texas. It involved the digitisation of more than 5,000 images. The director of the library, Fionnuala Croke said the project was fostering new and exciting research on the papyrus collection.
