DRAWINGS AND MANUSCRIPTS BY JOHN LENNON AT SOTHEBY’S

    Monday, March 17th, 2014

A collection drawings and manuscripts by John Lennon come up at Sotheby’s New York on June 4.  They were produced by Lennon for his books: In His Own Write (1964) and A Spaniard in the Works (1965).  The largest private collection of John Lennon’s work ever to come to market includes 89 lots ranging in estimate from $500 to $70,000. The sale coincides with two important landmarks for Lennon: the 50th anniversary of the publication of In His Own Write; and the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ landmark first appearance in America on the Ed Sullivan show, which launched them into the pop stratosphere.

They are from the collection of publisher Tom Maschler.  As Literary Director of Jonathan Cape in the 1960’s he was responsible for bringing both In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works to fruition. This outstanding collection of works from Lennon’s own hand, often complete with deletions and amendments, represents the raw material from which Tom Maschler honed the two critically-acclaimed Lennon books. Given to Maschler by the artist the material has been treasured by Lennon’s publisher for the last 50 years.

PRE-REVOLUTIONARY AMERICAN PORTRAIT BY JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY

    Sunday, March 16th, 2014
The 1771 portrait by John Singleton Copley of Capt. Gabriel Maturin

The 1771 portrait by John Singleton Copley of Capt. Gabriel Maturin

A pre-revolutionary American portrait by John Singleton Copley, the portrait artist born in Boston of Irish parents around 1798, comes up at Bonhams in New York on May 21. The long-lost 1771 portrait of Captain Gabriel Maturin  was painted four years before the American Revolution during Copley’s  six-month stay in New York. Itemised in his 1771 list of New York commissions the painting was discovered in the US and identified in 2011.  It is estimated  at $500,000-700,000.  Copley’s brief stay in New York was the artist’s only venture outside of Boston prior to his permanent departure in 1774 for Italy, and ultimately London.

Kayla Carlsen, Bonhams Senior Specialist in American Art, commented: “Copley’s New York paintings are of special interest because they represent an aspect of American society now largely lost from view, namely the estimated one-third of the American populace that remained loyal to the King. Many of Copley’s portraits from this period were lost in the tumult of the American Revolutionary War, making this discovery all the more extraordinary.”
Captain Gabriel Maturin was Aide de Camp to the Commander in Chief of His Majesty’s Armed Forces in America, Major General Thomas Gage. Captain Maturin was Gage’s closest Aide and effectively his chief of staff, who came from a French Huguenot family by way of Ireland. Military service brought Maturin to New York in 1756, where he settled permanently and married into a New Jersey branch of the Livingston family.

    THE MEIYINGTANG CHENGHUA CHICKEN CUP

    Friday, March 14th, 2014

The Meiyintang Chenghua “Chicken Cup” .

    The Meiyintang Chenghua “Chicken Cup”
UPDATE: SOLD FOR US$36.05 MILLION, A WORLD RECORD PRICE FOR A PIECE OF CHINESE PORCELAIN.

Sotheby’s will offer a “Chicken Cup”  –  the most expensive, most sought-after and most reproduced Chinese objects since the Ming dynasty –  at their Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art spring sales in Hong Kong on April 8.  The Meiyintang Chicken Cup – estimated at $25.6-38.5 million US – is one of only four preserved in private hands. The Meiyintang Collection is Europe’s grandest collection of Imperial Chinese porcelain.

First created in the Chenghua reign (1465 – 87), “Chicken cups” have been praised, desired and reproduced by Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) emperors and other discerning literati collectors.  With a legendary aura that goes well beyond their immediate art-historical importance,“chicken cups” have in modern days set record prices for Chinese art in 1980 and 1999.

Chenghua “Chicken cups” were produced in extremely small quantities. Apart from the present example, only three others are preserved in private hands and no more than a few of the world’s most prestigious museums can boast an example among their collections, including The National Palace Museum, Taipei; the British Museum, London; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Collections Baur, Geneva.  The present example was sold at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in 1999 for $3.7 million US.

UPDATE:  It sold for a world record price of US$36.05 million to Shanghai collector Mr. Liu Yiqian.

A drawing of Christy Brown, presumed to be a self-portrait, at Bonhams.

A Christy Brown archive will be sold at Bonhams in London on March 19. It comprises previously unseen sketches, paintings and unpublished poems as well as a large cache of correspondence and writings with 43 letters dating from 1945-76.  The archive of the renowned painter and author whose life inspired the Oscar winning film of My Left Foot is estimated at £30,000-40,000.

Christy Brown always recognised that his struggle to overcome the effects of cerebral palsy was an inescapable part of his drive for self expression through writing and art. When asked by an interviewer what he might have achieved without his disability, Brown replied that he would have become a bricklayer like his father.
The archive also includes letters from Christy to his family and to Christy from his American friend and lover, Beth Moore and from Dr Robert Collis who first arranged treatment of his cerebral palsy.
