THERE  was a new record for a work by a living Chinese artist and eleven records were smashed at Sotheby’s 40th anniversary evening sale in Hong Kong on October 5.  The sale achieved US$145,188,462 over a pre-sale high estimate of $85 million.  No less than eleven artists records were established.  The top lot was Zeng Fanzhi’s  The Last Supper which made $23,273,151, a new record for a work by a living Chinese artist and a record for a work of contemporary Asian art.

It was standing room only in a saleroom crowded with nearly 700 people.  Bidding by phone and on the net came from 25 countries.  The auction achieved the highest total for any comparable sale in Asia  across the categories of  20th Century Chinese Art, Contemporary Asian Art and Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art.   Five bidders competed for more than fifteen minutes for Zeng Fanzhi’s The Last Supper, a 2001 oil-on-canvas.

The record breaking run continued on October 6 when 20th Century Chinese Art brought in US$96 Million and  Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art achieved US$29 Million.  Both auctions made records for a sale in the category.

The epitome of Pop – Andy Warhol’s Coca-Cola (3) – will highlight Christie’s Post War and Contemporary Art evening sale in New York on November 12.  One of the most famous Pop Art masterworks Coca-Cola (3) is a unique hand painted picture – not a silkscreen.  Painted in 1962 the work has featured in every major Warhol exhibition and is estimated at $40-60 million.

What’s great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca Cola, too. A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.”  Andy Warhol .

“At a time when international top collectors are looking for blue-chip masterpieces, nothing is more iconic than the remarkable hand-painted Coca-Cola by the master of Pop Art, Andy Warhol. Coca Cola (3) is one of the artist’s earliest works which defines the Pop generation. This museum quality work has been in one of the most important Warhol collections for almost two decades”, declared Brett Gorvy, Christie’s International Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art.

CANALETTO’S MOST CELEBRATED SUBJECTS AT SOTHEBY’S

    Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013
Canaletto’s most celebrated Venetian subjects, the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square, will be offered as a pair at Sotheby’s in London on December 4 next.  Painted between 1738 and 1742 and from the HSBCS Collection the paintings are extimated at £8-12 million.  The works will be exhibited in Europe including Moscow, the US and Hong Kong prior to sale.
It is thought the works are likely to have been an English grand tourist’s commission.  In the second half of the 18th century they entered the collection of banker John Furnell Tuffen.  At his sale in 1818 they were bought by William Lygon, 2nd Earl Beauchamp, in whose family they remained for five generations until 1939. They lived at Madresfield Court in Worcestershire, the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead. The remained in private collections until 1997 when acquired by Safra Republic Holding which was acuired by HSBC in 1999. (Click on either image to enlarge).
