The foyer feature at this year’s Winter Decorative antiques and textiles fair in London is all about chairs. Take A Seat: Three Hundred Years of Chair Design will will have examples drawn from exhibitors. The display will demonstrate the evolution of chair styles from the 1700’s and 1800’s, via Arts and Crafts, Modernist, Memphis Group and architect-designed pieces. The fair runs at the Marquee, Battersea Park, London from Janaury 19-24. There will be over 150 exhibitors, including fine and decorative antiques, stylish 20th century design, accessories such as lighting and mirrors, garden and architectural antiques, and works of art from all periods to the contemporary. The selection of chairs illustrated includes jointed and high-back designs from the 17th and 18th centuries including regional vernacular variations; country stick-back chairs from Wales, the West Country and Windsor; Georgian pieces by master cabinetmakers in Sheraton, Chippendale & Regency designs; 18th and 19th century European salon chairs with painted finishes; Arts & Crafts aesthetic designs championed by William Morris; mid-century modern inspired by the 1951 Festival of Britain and the space race; chairs by named designers and architects such as Eames, Perriand and Arad and Post-modernist styles such as 1980’s Italian Memphis Group.
