The musée du Louvre is auctioning 24 exceptional lots with Christie’s and support of the Hôtel Drouot. The unprecendent online Bid for the Louvre auction will be held on Christie’s online platform from December 1-15. The sale of contemporary artworks, unique luxury pieces once in a lifetime experiences is designed to support the museum through these times and raise funds for Studio, a new space dedicated to artistic and cultural education due to open in autumn 2021. Some of the offered lots are unique. Among them is the opportunity to attend the annual examination of the Mona Lisa outside her display case, or the chance to walk through the rooftops of the Palais du Louvre in the company of the artist JR. Daniel O’Neill Romanticism & Friendships by Karen Reihill is published today. To mark the centenary year of the Belfast born artist two events had been planned and both had to be cancelled. A retrospective exhibition at the OPW’s Farmleigh Gallery had been scheduled for May and Rehill’s monograph was to have been launched to coincide with this. The exhibition was re-scheduled to November 28 only to be postponed once again because of Covid-19. Meanwhile Reihill has decided to go ahead with the publication of the book which contains 192 Pages with 370 images in colour and period black and white photographs. The cushion-cut 43.10 carat Kashmir sapphire surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds is detachable and may be worn as a brooch. It is estimated at $5-7 million. The sale of over 380 lots includes signed jewels by makers including René Boivin, Bulgari, Cartier, Graff, Harry Winston, Raymond Yard, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Verdura.

Around 200 valuable books stolen from a warehouse near Heathrow in 2017 have been recovered in Romania. They include first editions of Galileo and Isaac Newton. They were found buried under the floor of a house in the region of Neamt, in north-eastern Romania, on Wednesday. A Romanian organised crime gang was responsible for the theft. The BBC reports that thirteen people have been charged, 12 of whom have already pleaded guilty. The books were being stored in a warehouse ahead of being transported to a specialist book auction in Las Vegas, in the US, when they were stolen.
Dolly Parton’s Swarovski-crystal bedazzled four-string dulcimer will lead an online only charity auction at Christie’s. Entitled “NASHVILLE: An Auction to benefit ACM Lifting Lives® COVID-19 Response Fund” it will lead a sale with items donated by some of the biggest names in country music including Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Marty Stuart, Bernie Taupin and Trisha Yearwood. The dulcimer has been owned by Dolly Parton for 30 years and was used to play “Jolene” during her 50th Anniversary performance at the Grand Ole Opry in 2019. It is estimated at $50,000-100,000.

An internally flawless 102.39-carat diamond comes under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong next month. There is no estimate but diamonds of this size and quality have D colour oval stone was cut from a 271-carat rough diamond discovered in Ontario, Canada in 2018. It has achieved top rank in each of the “four Cs” — cut, colour, clarity and carat weight — by which a diamond is judged. In the circumstances of the moment it is being offered without a reserve. Bidding opens online from September 15 and the sale end at a live auction in Hong Kong on October 5.
