A virtual art fair with a difference by Hibernian Antique Fairs runs online today and tomorrow. This is the seventh edition of these lockdown fairs in which dealers post pictures of items priced for sale. What is different this time is that the fair includes the Tralee house contents of the late Mrs. Breda Clifford, forever associated with The Mount Brandon Hotel and an enthusiastic supporter of the regular Tralee antique fairs. Hibernian Antique Fairs organiser Robin O’Donnell will include the collection she amassed in this fair and promises that prices will be affordable and realistic. The collection is offered alongside art, furniture, silver, jewellery and collectibles from dealers around the country. This late 19th century French brass six sided hall lantern from Hudson Antiques is part of the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair. This year the fair is taking the form of an online auction with 345 lots at Bonhams which runs until February 12. Lot 57 is estimated at £1,600-2,200.
After the auction successful buyers will be contacted by Bonhams to see if they would like to collect their purchased lots from the vendors premises or from Cadogan Tate in Park Royal, London. Oversized items such as garden sculpture which require heavy lifting equipment will only be available for collection from the vendors premises.
THE Winter Show in New York and all its programmes are free and open to the public online. Visitors can peruse 5,000 years of art, antiques, and design presented by 60 internationally renowned dealers. Search the fair’s viewing rooms, virtual gallery spaces, gallery talks and listen in on panel discussions featuring leaders in the art and design worlds. It runs until January 31.

In New York the Winter Show gets underway online for the first time ever today. With 60 leading international exhibitors the fair runs until January 31. This year it is available to everyone from the comfort of their own home. If you visit the online stand of London antique furniture specialists Ronald Phillips you will be met at the entrance by a pair of Irish George III oval mirror girandoles c1780. They retain the original silvered brass candle arms and one original plate (the other is an 18th century replacement). Ronald Phillips say that it is extremely rare to find single candle arms attached to the frame, which in this example is of an unusually small sale.

FROM jewellery to artwork there promises to be a diverse selection on offer at the virtual art fair which Hibernian Antique Fairs will run on January 16-17. A link to access the fair will be made available on the Hibernian Antiques Fairs facebook page on January 16. Dealers taking part will show photographs of what is on offer plus contact and delivery details. Among those taking part are Treasures Irish Art of Athlone. They will show a number of works by the self taught London born Irish painter Ken Moroney (1949-2018). He specialised in Impressionist painting and romantic Edwardian style subjects.

It isn’t great but it isn’t all bad either. Pandemic closures are horrible but there is much to explore online. If, for instance, you thought you might never get to visit the Mayfair Antiques Fair in London or the New York Winter Show, you were wrong. In 2021 they are available at the touch of a button on your computer.This is part of an ongoing shift online. All the data so far available from 2020 strongly suggests that large numbers of people who might never go to an auction viewing are buying online. At Christie’s, for instance, preliminary figures suggest that 36% of all buyers last year were new to the auction house. This experience is repeated everywhere else as the pandemic delivers new customers.Another statistic from Christie’s showed that 32% of all new online buyers were millennials (23 to 38 years old). In case you are wondering they are the ones who come after Generation X and before Generation Z. So the pandemic is leading large numbers of buyers straight to auction, spawning a new generation of young collectors and opening up specialist fairs to people everywhere. Anything positive in the midst of this lockdown is to be warmly welcomed and this bit of positivity is likely to have a long term impact.

The Mayfair Antiques Fair usually takes place at the London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square. This year it is in a new online guise. A dynamic group of leading international dealers will take part in New York’s Winter Show. The inaugural online edition takes place from January 22-31 with VIP preview access from January 19-21. The 60 exhibitors will present a diverse mix of fine and decorative arts from ancient times to the present day. Executive Director Helen Allen said: “We have worked to create a virtual format that is interactive, visually stimulating, and showcases the quality and depth of the objects presented”.
The online platform allows exhibitors present a gallery exhibition in a three-dimensional virtual space.
