Islands, a magnificent oil on board by Patrick Collins (1911-1994) is a feature lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s art auction at the RDS on September 15 at 6 p.m.. According to catalogue notes by art historian Niamh O’Sullivan: “Collins played a significant part in the radicalization and internationalization of Irish art. In many respects, Ireland skipped the evolving ‘isms of European and American twentieth century art until the 1960s. This sudden recognition of modernism resulted in a unique form, typified by Collins, a bringing together an art that acknowledges its Celtic past, but is distinctly modern”. Islands, which was once in the collection of Sir Basil Goulding, is estimated at 17,500-25,000.
Other pieces in the 114 lot auction on offer include Paper Crane by the Beijing based artist Li Wentao (50,000-70,000) and Still Life with Flowers by Roderick O’Conor (12,000-18,000). There is an exceptional example by Sean McSweeney entitled Bogland (6,000-8,000) and work by artists including Jack B. Yeats, Evie Hone, Hector McDonnell, Basil Blackshaw, Frank Egginton, Arthur Maderson, William Conor, Norah McGuinness, Elizabeth Cope and Gladys MacCabe.
