Drawn exclusively from private collections in Ireland Gerard Dillon, Art and Friendships is the title of the fourth summer loan exhibition at James Adam. The exhibition examines his life and the bonds of his friendships from 1940 to 1971. The core group comprised Dillon, brothers George and Arthur Campbell, Arthur Armstrong and Daniel O’Neill and they were known variously as “The Ulster Group”, “The Northern Artists”, “The Ulster Painters” and “The Belfast Painters”.
The art of Gerard Dillon developed from his naive style of the 1940’s to his experiment with abstract sand paintings in the late 1950’s and found objects in the 1960’s. In his final series the figure of a clown and pierrot set in surreal landscapes ecurrently feature.
The exhibition is at Adams, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin until July 26 and at the Ava Gallery, Clandeboye Estate, Co. Down from August 1 to August 29.
