Magnus Éirí by Joseph Walsh at Adare Manor
Magnus Éirí is a monumental new sculpture by Joseph Walsh, created specifically for the landscape at Adare Manor. Rising 12 metres in height and formed from bronze, oak and gold, the sculpture is a continuous, flowing gesture exploring the relationship between humanity and nature. The title brings together Magnus, the Latin word for “great” or “monumental”, and Éirí, meaning “rising” in Irish. Its ascending and descending form takes inspiration from the nearby River Maigue and the landscape it has shaped over centuries.
The bronze lower section carries the imprint of Joseph Walsh’s thumb, representing the human-made element. Above, oak follows a freer path, representing nature finding its own way. The gilded surface reflects ideas of aspiration and enlightenment. Commissioned in 2021 and developed over five years, Magnus Éirí is the tallest work realised by the Riverstick, Co. Cork based Joseph Walsh Studio to date.
