AN opportunity to view art from members of the radical 1940’s White Stag Group is at the Adams Salesroom, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin until February 3. Centred around the artists Basil Rakoczi and Kenneth Hall the group, founded in London in 1935, moved to Ireland in 1939 and stayed until just after the Second World War. Irish members included Thurloe Conolly, Paul Egestorff, Stephen Gilbert and Dorothy Blackham. All are represented in this exhibition. Their bohemian approach and quirky artwork helped liberalise Irish artwork from the grip of an ultra-conservative culture in the 1940’s.
The exhibition is curated by David Britton of Adams who sourced work from a number of private collections in Ireland and abroad. Most of the work is for sale at prices ranging from 475 to 12,000. The exhibition was shown at Clanedboye in Northern Ireland last October-November and 26 of the works on show were sold. An additional 20 works have been added to the Dublin show.
