    RENOIR FROM VOLLARD COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S IN NEW YORK

    Paul Gauguin: Nature morte avec pivoines de chine et mandoline (1885). UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR $10,444,700

    Four works from the collection of Ambroise Vollard, one of the most important art dealers in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will come up at Sotheby’s Modern evening auction in New York in May. The group is highlighted by a major still life by Paul Gauguin, one of the most significant by the artist to appear at auction, which hung on the walls of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris for almost 40 years since its founding in 1986.
    Following years of legal proceedings, during which the heirs of Ambroise Vollard were represented by lawyers
    including François Honnorat, a French court recently ruled that ownership of the works would be returned to
    Vollard’s descendants. The collection includes works by Renoir and Cezanne.

    WORKS ON PAPER ONLINE AT JAMES ADAM DUBLIN

    Baigneuse Assise, a soft ground etching by Pierre Renoir, comes up at the James Adam online Works on Paper sale which runs until August 10. From an edition of 1,000 a complete with the artist’s stamped signature, it is estimated at 800-1,200. The sale of 435 lots includes old Irish maps, engraved views and etchings, handcoloured Cuala Press prints, art, various documents, photographs and books.

    FLYING START TO 20TH CENTURY SALES AT CHRISTIE’S

    René Magritte – La corde sensible

    A combined total of £136,874,598 was realised at the Impressionist & Modern Art evening sale and Art of the Surreal  which launched 20th Century at Christie’s in London last night. The top lot was Paul Gauguin’s Te Fare (La maison) which made £20,325,000. René Magritte’s La corde sensible set a new world record at auction for the artist of £14,441,348. The evening saw an electric start with lively bidding for Portrait de Lluis Alemany, a work dating from the very beginning of Picasso’s career (£773,000), and continued with Berthe Morisot’s Femme en noir or Avant le théâtre which achieved £2,045,000 against a pre-sale estimate of £600,000-800,000 and Femme et enfant au balcon also by Morisot, which more than doubled its high estimate to realise £4,085,000.

    The nine further works from the personal collection of Barbara Lambrecht, including paintings by Kees van Dongen, Raoul Dufy, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Félix Vallotton, each sold above estimate with the group totalling £15,945,000 to date. All proceeds are to benefit the Rubens Prize Collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen.  There was sell through rates of 92% by lot and 96% by value and registered bidders from 39 countries across five continents demonstrate continued global interest from buyers with notable bidding from Asia.

    A MONET BY RENOIR AT TEFAF

    This painting, Femme cueillant des Fleurs (Woman picking flowers) depicts Camille Monet, first wife of Claude Monet, who died young.  The work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) features at The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) at Maastricht. It is being sold through Dickinson by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in the United States in order to strengthen other areas of its collection.
    Important early Impressionist paintings are increasingly rare on the market. This one is a poignant reminder of a story of fierce jealousy involving Monet’s first and second wives. Camille Doncieux was 18 years old when Monet met her in 1865. She became his lover and the model for a number of  works in these early years. Monet’s father refused to accept her into the family because of her humble origins. Despite this the couple married in 1870.
    The lifelong friendship between Monet and Renoir was at its closest between 1866 and 1875. The two men often painted together. Camille was depicted in a number of their paintings including Femme cueillant des Fleurs, which dates from this period in the development of Impressionism.  A year after Renoir painted this picture, Camille became ill and in 1879 she died aged 32 , her already poor health worsened by the recent birth of her second son Michel.
    Monet’s second wife Alice Hoschedé destroyed all the material that she could find relating to Camille. Only one photograph survived the purge.
    TEFAF runs at Maastricht in The Netherlands from March 18-27.

    MOORE AND RENOIR AT TEFAF, MAASTRICHT

    Henry Moore at Tefaf Maastricht

    Among an extraordinary display of masterpieces at TEFAF Maastricht from March 18-27 2011 will be a Henry Moore Mother and child sculpture and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s depiction of his son Claude.

    Mother and child block seat by Henry Moore will be brought to The European Fine Art Fair by Landau Fine Art of Montreal. The 244cm high bronze sculpture will be exhibited in one of the Fair’s squares. Cast in an edition of nine in 1983, three years before Moore’s death, it portrays the child as an elemental, virtually abstract, form as if to represent it in an early stage of development. The effect of “the big form protecting the small form”, as Moore described it, is compelling.
    Hammer Galleries of New York will exhibit La leçon (Bielle, l’institutrice et Claude Renoir lisant), which portrays Renoir’s third son reading with his school teacher. The picture, painted c1906, has been in private collections for decades.
    TEFAF 2011 will have some 260 exhibitors from 16 countries in nine sections. In addition to exhibitors from established centres of the art and antiques market in Europe and North America, the 2011 Fair will include dealers from Korea, Uruguay and Argentina.
