A watercolour of Samuel Beckett by Louis le Brocquy is among the highlights at Gormley’s evening online art auction in Belfast on February 23). It is estimated at €19,100-€22,750. A bronze standing Irish wolfhound by Stephen McKeown is estimated at €11,500-€17,000. There is a print by Damien Hirst, a lithograph by Salvador Dali and work by Maurice Wilks, Charles McAuley, Brian Ballard, Gladys McCabe, Markey Robinson and other well known Irish artists.
A Le Brocquy pen, ink and watercolour ‘Red Roses for Me’ leads the James Adam timed online sale of contents from Number 1 Wellington Road, Dublin which is now underway and runs until January 11. The former restaurateur Peter White is downsizing and his lifetime collection is coming under the hammer. The 1946 work – inspired by the
Sean O’Casey play of the same name about a Dublin Protestant family
against the backdrop of the 1913 Lockout – is estimated at 8,000-12,000.
The sale comprises Irish, British and Continental paintings from the early 19th century to the present day, bronzes, prints, furniture, porcelain, silver and domestic effects.
Mille Tetes is the title of this Aubusson tapestry by Louis le Brocquy at the James Adam online sale of Important Irish art on December 9. According to a catalogue note by Niamh Corcoran Mille Tetes (1,000 Heads) is a distinctive example of both Le Brocquy’s sustained interest in representing the human head and the visual effect of inverting colour and tone. Signed and dated 1973 this is number 1 of an edition of 9. It is estimated at 50,000-80,000.
Hand (1971) is the title of this piece by Louis le Brocquy at Whyte’s autumn online art auction which continues until October 5. The lithograph on handmade paper, number 10 from an edition of 70, was exhibited at Gimpel and Weitzenhoffer, New York in 1971. It is estimated at 1,000-1,500. TOP lots at de Veres sale of outstanding Irish Art and Sculpture online in Dublin this evening included the following hammer prices: The Street Performer by Jack B. Yeats (184,000); Achill Cottage, Lough Corrib by Pau Henry (116,000); Life Study by Louis le Brocquy (114,000); Head of Francis Bacon by le Brocquy (90,000) and Peonies and Iris in a vase and a bowl of fruit by Roderic O’Conor (78,000). The most expensively estimated lot in the auction, Double Window by Sean Scully (600,000-900,000) failed to sell.
The auction totalled 1.25 million and 85% of lots were sold.
A crayon on pencil drawing by Louis le Brocquy entitled Children Playing, Parish (1948) is among the lots at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online sale of Irish and International art on July 20. It is estimated at 3,000-5,000. The catalogue is online and lists 273 lots on offer.
On May 18 in the year 2000 the Irish artist Louis le Brocquy made headlines when his Travelling Woman with Newspaper sold for a record £1,158,500 at Sotheby’s. The buyer was Michael Smurfit. He is now selling off some of his collection so the same painting will come up at Sotheby’s in London next September 9, this time with an estimate of £700,000-1,000,000. In pure investment terms this amounts to no appreciation for a fascinating work of art by one of the leading Irish artists of his generation.

The watercolour on tissue paper is signed and dated 1992 and is estimated at 15,000-20,000. The sale features work by Jack Yeats, Paul Henry, William Conor, Beatrice Glenavy, William Sadler, Nathaniel Hone The Elder, Louis le Brocquy, Tony O’Malley, Donald Teskey and many other Irish artists. Viewing gets underway at the RDS tomorrow.

A timed online auction of accessible at from Ireland and around the world runs at Whyte’s until February 17. Among the leading Irish artists represented are Jack Yeats, Louis le Brocquy, Estella Solomons, Colin Middleton, Seán McSweeney and Markey Robinson. Estimates range from €50 to €1,000, with most under €500.
A timed auction is similar to EBay auctions but “sniping” (last split second bidding by programmes) is prevented by ten minute wait periods. The sale will be on view at Whyte’s at Molesworth St., Dublin from February 12-14 and on February 17. The catalogue is online.
Billed by Whyte’s as an historic opportunity for Irish collectors the sale of the Ernie O’Malley Collection in Dublin on November 25 will be on view at Christie’s in London this weekend and at the RDS in Dublin from November 23. The sale is by Whyte’s in association with Christie’s and highlights have already been seen at Christie’s in New York. The auction of 100 lots is highlighted by five major oils by Yeats and contains works by a number of leading Irish artists from the 1930’s to the 1950’s.
