A KAHLO FROM THE COLLECTION OF A&M’S M

    Wednesday, October 11th, 2023
FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954) – Portrait of Cristina, My Sister (1928)

This Frida Kahlo portrait is from the collection of Jerry Moss, the M and A&M Records. Thirteen  works from his collection will be showcased in a single-owner section of Christie’s 20th Century evening sale in New York on November 9. Jerry Moss was a music industry giant who played a critical role in establishing careers of the biggest musical acts in history—Sting, Janet Jackson, Peter Frampton, Cat Stevens, Carole King, and countless more. Moss’s art collection comprises a fantastic group of objects that span a range of genres, representing the European avant-garde, icons of Latin American art, and contemporary masters.

Highlights include: Friday Kahlo’s Portrait of Cristina, My Sister ($8 million – 12 million) and Tamara de Lempicka’s Fillette en rose ($7 million – 10 million) two deeply personal portraits by women of their immediate family members—the first, of the artist’s sister and the second of the artist’s daughter. The top lot of the group is Picasso’s Nu couché, estimated to achieve $10 million – 15 million. Subsequent property from the collection will be sold in the Marquee Week day sales and the Design sales in December. In total, the collection is estimated to realise in excess of $50 million, with partial proceeds to benefit The Music Center.

    RE-DISCOVERED PORTRAIT BY FRIDA KAHLO

    Wednesday, November 16th, 2016

redis-kahloA rediscovered portrait by Frida Kahlo portrait comes up at Sotheby’s in New York on November 22. In the summer of 2016 Niña Con Collar  surfaced when Sotheby’s was approached by a former personal assistant of Kahlo’s who had been given the work as a keepsake by Diego Rivera the year after Kahlo’s death in 1954.  It will be offered as part of the Latin America: Modern Art sale with an estimate of $1.5 / 2 million.

The only record of Niña Con Collar had been a black-and-white photograph taken by the artist’s friend Lola Álvarez Bravo who documented her early works. That picture was used as the work’s catalogue raisonné entry and has been the only documentation of the painting until now.

Axel Stein, Sotheby’s head of Latin American art, commented: “I have known Niña Con Collar since 1988 when I saw the black and white photograph in the newly published catalogue raisonné. I never imagined it would surface and turn out to be such a beautiful and warm painting.” With the subject’s direct stare from under her spreading eyebrow and the rigid symmetry of a frontal pose, Niña Con Collar immediately recalls some of the artist’s most celebrated paintings.

UPDATE:  THIS WORK SOLD FOR $1,812,500

There was a world record for Frida Kahlo at Christie’s in New York last night when Dos desnudos en el bisque (La tierra misma) sold for $8,005,000 at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale.  This was a record for any Latin American artist at auction.

The top lot of the sale was Monet’s Le bassin aux nympheas which made $27,045,000. Modigliani’s Jeune Femme a la rose (Margherita) made $12,765,000 and Au Petit Gennevilliers by Monet sold for $11,365,000.  The sale total was $141,532,000 in an auction where 44 of the 51 lots offered found buyers.

The sale attracted registered bidders from 36 countries, with strong bidding from Asia, Europe and the United States.

Brooke Lampley, Head of Impressionist & Modern Art at Christie’s New Yorkremarked: The strong outcome of tonight’s sale is the result of confidence and enthusiasm in the market at the tail end of a successful week. This was a tightly edited sale that united rare and blue-chip works at a variety of price levels. Bidders competed vigorously for works by Barbara Hepworth, Francis Picabia, Paul Klee, Hermann Max Pechstein, and Marc Chagall. We saw Asian bidding for a wide range of artists at a variety of price points. It was gratifying to witness a sophisticated and intelligent market at work. We are particularly proud of the result achieved for Frida Kahlo’s Dos desnudos en el bosque, which set the world auction record for the artist and became the highest price for any work by a Latin American artist. Tonight’s results bring our running total to $620.7 million”.
