MAJOR GALLERIES AND COLLECTIONS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

NATIONAL GALLERY OF IRELAND, DUBLIN

IMMA, DUBLIN

IMMA, the Irish Museum of Modern Art Ireland’s is national institution for modern and contemporary art. The permanent collection comprises around 2,500 works by 20th-century and contemporary Irish and international artists. The main building at IMMA is closed for refurbishment and will re-open on October 11, 2013. Exhibitions are continuing in the New Galleries during the closure. The Artists Residency programme also continues on site. www.modernart.ie

CRAWFORD GALLERY, CORK

THE Crawford Art Gallery, the city art museum for Cork, was formed in 1819. The collection numbers some 2,500 paintings sculptures, prints and other works of art. It is strongest in 20th century and contemporary Irish art. In 2006 ownership was transferred to the Office of Public Works, and the gallery designated a National Cultural Institution. An Illustrated Summary Catalogue was published in 1992.  www.crawfordartgallery.ie

GLUCKSMAN GALLERY, CORK

The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is located in a new building designed by O’Donnell and Tuomey which was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2005. It is at the main entrance to University College Cork on Western Road near the city centre.. www.glucksman.org

THE HUNT MUSEUM, LIMERICK

One of Ireland’s greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from the Neolithic to the 20th Century, is housed here. The Hunt Museum collection includes works by Renoir, Picasso and Yeats.It is located at Rutland St., Limerick. www.huntmuseum.com

THE HUGH LANE GALLERY, DUBLIN

Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane, houses modern and contemporary art. The gallery gained world wide recognition with the acquisition of the entire contents of Francis Bacon’s Reece Mews Studio in London from Bacon’s sole heir John Edwards. The reconstructed studio opened on 23 May 23, 2001. www.hughlane.ie

LISMORE CASTLE ARTS

The main exhibition for 2013 at Lismore Castle Arts is Monuments. Curated by Mark Sladen it features Pablo Bronstein, Iman Issa, Aleksandra Mir, Yorgos Sapountzis and Danh Vo.  It runs to September 30, 2013.  www.lismorecastlearts.ie

LIMERICK CITY GALLERY

The Carnegie Building housing Limerick City Gallery of Art has re-opened after re-development. Opening hours are now extended to include late opening until 7pm on Thursday and Friday evenings. www.gallery.limerick.ie

VISUAL, CARLOW

VISUAL – Centre for Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre is an architectural masterwork designed by Terry Pawson and located at Old Dublin Road, Carlow.   www.visualcarlow.ie

THE NATIONAL SELF-PORTRAIT COLLECTION OF IRELAND

The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland is at the University of Limerick. There are more than 400 works in the collection.
