  • ORDER OF SURRENDER SPARKS BIDDING WAR

    Surrender Order

There was a bidding war at Bonhams in London on June 14 for a typed Order of Surrender from the 1916 Rising.  Signed by Patrick Pearse it sold for £263,000 over an estimate of £80,000-120,000.

Bonhams representative in Ireland, manuscript specialist Kieran O’Boyle, said, “The Order of Surrender is one of the most significant documents in Irish 20th century history, and I am not surprised that it was so keenly sought after, nor that it sold for such an impressive amount.”

The order ended the Easter Rising in April 1916.  The nationalist uprising, which broke out on Easter Monday under the overall leadership of Pearse was met with uncompromising and overwhelming force by the British authorities.
