There was a world record for any Japanese print at a Beaussant Lefèvre auction in association with Christie’s in Paris. Deeply Hidden Love (Fukaku shinobu koi) by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753?-1806) sold for 745,800 (including buyer’s premium).  It was part of the sale of the Portier Collection of Japanese Art at Drouot.

Deeply Hidden Love is from the series Anthology of Poems: The Love Section and is on a rare pink mica ground.  The sale from a well known family of experts and collectors attracted European, American, Japanese and international collectors.  The auction brought in 1.5 million and all lots were sold.P

In a post sale statement Eric Beaussant and Pierre-Yves Lefèvre, Géraldine Lenain, international director of Asian arts at Christie’s expert in Asian art Alice Jossaume said:  We are very pleased with the success of the sale and with our collaboration, which highlighted the wise selection of four generations of collectors and major figures of the Asian art market. Quality, rarity, provenance and high-end bids make this collection one that will remain in the books of great Japanese art sales in Paris”.
