Being by Louis le Brocquy (1916-2012) (80,000-100,000).  UPDATE: THIS MADE 78,000 AT HAMMER

An ethereal le Brocquy work entitled Being (80,000-100,000) highlights the sale by Whyte’s at the RDS on November 30.  From around the middle of the 1990’s to 2005 the artist returned to his earlier preoccupation with the Presence series in a body of work called human images, of which this is one.  There is a strong selection in a catalogue of 161 works. Whyte’s recent auctions have proved to be hugely successful and the auction house say that this confirms growing demand for quality pieces at the top end of the market.

IRISH ART DOES WELL AT CHRISTIE’S IN LONDON

Jack Butler Yeats, R.H.A. (1871-1957) The Boat Builder

Jack Butler Yeats, R.H.A. (1871-1957) The Boat Builder

There was a good curtain raiser to the four upcoming sales of Important Irish art in Dublin at Christie’s in London last night.  Works by Yeats, Lavery, Paul Henry and Roderic O’Conor all found buyers.  Christie’s was confident that their Yeats – The Boat Builder – would find a buyer as works by the artist from this period are rare. It was painted in 1913.  Estimated at £300,000-500,000 it sold for £422,500.

Sir John Lavery’s similarly estimated The Maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes sold for £338,500. The Village by the Lake by Paul Henry made £182,500 and O’Conor’s Baigneuse a la mer sold for £134,500.

There are upcoming sales of important Irish art at Whytes, de Veres, Adams and by Morgan O’Driscoll, starting with Whytes at the RDS on November 30.

The ejector gun by J. Purdey and Sons (£6,000-8,000).

A 12 bore ejector gun by Purdey built for the Earl of Shannon comes up at Gavin Gardiner’s sale of modern and vintage sporting guns and rifles at Sotheby’s in London on December 1.  J. Purdey and Sons have confirmed that the side lock gun No. 15503 was built in 1896 and replacement barrels were fitted in 1956.  It is estimated at £6,000-8,000.

The first Earl of Shannon, a title created in 1756, was made Viscount Boyle of Bandon and Baron, Castle Martyr. He was succeeded by his son who was created Baron Carleton of York in 1786 which title gave him and later earls an automatic seat in the British House of Lords. The third earl served as Lord Lieutenant of County Cork and the fourth briefly represented Co. Cork in the House of Commons.  The title is currently held by the ninth earl, a descendant both of the first Earl of Orrery and the first Earl of Cork.

GERARD DILLON PORTRAIT OF DAN O’NEILL AT WHYTE’S

Gerard Dillon (1916-1971) – Portrait of Dan O’Neill (20,000-30,000).  UPDATE: THIS MADE 21,000

Gerard Dillon’s 1952 portrait of his fellow artist Dan O’Neill graces the catalogue cover for Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on November 30.  Based on the quality of works on offer and a new confidence in the salesrooms of Ireland Whyte’s remain optimistic about this sale of 161 lots.  The portrait, for instance, has been singled out twice for exhibitions at retrospectives in 1972 and 2003.  It is from a key point in Dillon’s career. By 1952 he had established himself as a painter and was closely involved in many of the exhibitions and organisations promoting and supporting visual art in Ireland North and South. He would go on to represent Great Britain in the Pittsburgh International exhibition in 1958 and the Guggenheim International, where he represented Ireland in 1958 and 1960.

Dillon’s contemporaries also shine in this sale with works by Dan O’Neill, Nano Reid and Norah McGuinness.  There is a strong selection of works by William Conor showing aspects of life in Belfast and an iconic West of Ireland landscape by Paul Henry.  The sale will be held at the RDS and the catalogue is online.

19TH CENTURY NATURAL PEARL NECKLACE FROM ISABELLA OF SPAIN

The 19th century natural coloured pearl necklace with Royal connections.

The 19th century natural coloured pearl necklace with Royal connections.  UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR £224,500

A rare, 19th century natural coloured pearl necklace that belonged to Queen Isabella II of Spain will come up at Christie’s important jewels auction in London on December 2. Estimated at £500,000-700,000 they were originally collected by King Ferdinand VII of Spain for his wife Marie Christina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (she was also his niece). Queen Isabella II of Spain was born in Madrid in 1830 and on the death of her father King Ferdinand VII was proclaimed sovereign at the age of three, with her mother acting as regent.

Against a backdrop of succession disputes and conspiracies, Isabella was finally declared to be of age at 13, where she reigned directly until the revolt of 1868, known as the Glorious Revolution, forced her into exile in France and ushered the First Spanish Republic into power. The necklace originally described as being formed from 46 pearls was later offered for sale at auction in Paris on July 1, 1878 consigned directly by Isabella II, along with other magnificent jewels in her collection. It came up again at Christie’s in London in April 1960 as ‘the property of Frank H. Hargrove, Esq.’ and has since remained in the same family.
