THE 1928 Mercedes-Benz 26/120/180 ‘S’ Type Sports Tourer. (Click on image to enlarge).  UPDATE: IT SOLD FOR £2.8 MILLION

ONE of the greatest vintage car finds of the past decade, a 1928 Mercedes Benz ‘S’ Type sports tourer, is expected to sell for more than £1.5 million at Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale next September 15.  The “lost Merdedes” has been parked in the same garage since the 1930’s, and laid up since the 1950’s.

The legendary Kompressor (Supercharger in German) ‘S’ series of the 1920’s re-established the company’s reputation for fast, luxurious and high quality cars. Ferdinand Porsche designed the supercharged 6.8-litre engine  which was set in a low-slung chassis frame adorned with the now iconic Mercedes ‘V’ radiator grille.  Capable of more than 100mph, the ‘S’ was first seen at the Nürburgring in 1927. The current owner’s grandfather a noted and pioneering British motorist, was one of the earliest buyers. Sold under order number 38130, the ‘S’ Type was supplied through ‘The British Mercedes Ltd.’ in London and was bodied by local London-based coachbuilders Cadogan Motors with lightweight fabric sports tourer bodywork.

The completed car was registered for the road in May 1928 and has remained in the ownership of the same family since. Painted in dark battleship grey, this majestic yet understated Mercedes has never been restored, and even retains its original blue leather upholstery in its entirety.

THERE was a record for any Danish work of art at auction at Sotheby’s when Vilhelm Hammershøi’s Ida Reading a Letter sold for £1,721,250.  It was hotly pursued by three bidders on the telephone before being knocked down to an international private collector. The price surpassed an estimate of £500,000-700,000 and was almost three times above the previous record. Ida Reading a Letter was one of five paintings by Vilhelm Hammershøi in the sale of European Paintings.  His work made a combined total of £4,313,450 in a sale which brought an overall total of £6,527,475.

Claude Piening, of Sotheby’s European Paintings department, said: “Bidding was international, with interest from Asia, America, Scandinavia and Central Europe. Hammershøi appeals to the tastes of the 21st-century collector. Exhibitions in London, Tokyo, Denmark and currently Munich continue to attract new admirers of his work, which draws parallels with Vermeer and Whistler, artists with similar sensibilities.”
